The Ten Commandments and Evangelism

Winning Souls

The great need of our day is for a powerful movement of God drawing a new generation of people to faith in Jesus Christ. More than anything, I want to be a winner of souls. I want this for the people in my church. And I want this for Christians in my generation.

Evangelism and The Ten Commandments

You may not realize just how intrinsically evangelistic the Ten Commandments are.

The people who received the commandments were as normal as you and me. They also were not intrinsically religious. They had a family connection to God but were not living out active faith.

After God miraculously delivered these people from the hand of slavery and Egypt, and before he delivered them to the promised land, he knew there was something they needed to hear. The words he spoke to this fledgling group were the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments are, by definition, introductory. They were God’s starting point to draw people to himself. As we seek to point people to Christ in our day, we could start in much worse places than God chose to begin.

Using the Commandments Evangelistically

My desire to win souls is one of the main reasons I wrote The Ten Commandments: A Short Book for Normal People. I wanted normal people living everyday lives to encounter God’s word revealed to the regular people at the foot of Mount Sinai. I use normal language, speak to normal people, and clearly show how every commandment points to Jesus.

I pray you will use my book to help others find Jesus Christ. Here are three recommendations.

Consider using social media to share quotes about the commandments or your own thoughts as you read. People use their social media to highlight the books they read, the meals they eat, and the places they visit. Why not use your social media feed to point people to the truth of God’s Word and the grace of Jesus Christ?

Consider inviting a small group of unbelievers to read the book with you. These could be people from your neighborhood, work, or school. The chapters are short and easy to understand. Your group could meet a few times and discuss multiple chapters per meeting, or ten times and discuss one commandment at a time.

Consider gifting a copy of the book to someone you know and love. You could offer the book with a written note or spoken word explaining that you have been interested in the Ten Commandments lately and would love to hear their thoughts on the book. One man in my church gave a copy to each of his grown children and told them that when they were done, he would pay for their lunch and listen to what they had to say.

An Introduction with Massive Impact

The Ten Commandments God gave as an introductory word have had an incredible impact. This is the most influential law code in history and has shaped countless cultures. I am praying that as you share these commandments with unbelievers, the people you know experience a similar kind of impact.
