The One Devotional Book You Should Read in 2026
I love to read devotional books personally, with my wife, and with my children. This habit is important to us because theology is not meant to be merely intellectual. It is meant to be alive with passion. God’s Word is meant to capture our hearts and press into the practical details of our lives.
I brought Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening with me into the hospital when I received my bone marrow transplant. It was a real comfort to me, day and night, in those isolated hours. Jenny would read to me every day – especially when I could not read it myself.
There was one night I was filled with fear about the future. I had been released from the ICU, but wondered what was next for me. What would happen to me? Would my cancer ever go away? It was the middle of the night, and Jenny read to me from Spurgeon. His words reminded me of God’s precious truth and love. It was a real comfort.
I don’t know what you are facing, but I know that God has proven himself faithful throughout church history. The power of God was upon Spurgeon and the saints in the 1800s, and Christ is still working among us today. It is our hope that this devotional will be a comfort to you in 2026.
Here are just five quotes from the book to encourage you:
- “God is always thinking about us, never turns His mind from us, always has us before His eyes.”
- “Beloved, the wounds of Jesus are fairer in our eyes than all the splendor and pomp of kings.”
- “Believer, rest assured that the heart of Jesus cares about your smallest concerns. The breadth of His tender love is such that you may turn to Him in every case; for in all your afflictions He is afflicted, and just like a father cares for his children, so He cares for you.”
- “Child of God, death has lost its sting, because the devil’s power over it is destroyed. Stop fearing death! Ask God the Holy Spirit to grant you an intimate knowledge and a firm belief in your Redeemer’s death, so that you may be strengthened for that journey.”
- “Are you faint and feeble because your way is rough and you are weary? Here is the promise — ‘He giveth power to the faint.’ When you read such a promise, take it back to the great Promiser, and ask Him to fulfill His own word.”
Devotional books also help us slow down, ponder specific aspects of Scripture, and worship God with all our hearts. The Holy Spirit can use a daily devotional to deepen our love for God. We pray you are blessed in 2026 by this modern version of a Christian classic.
