America Needs the Ten Commandments
Why the Culture is Crumbling
I pastor a church in Jacksonville, Florida full of normal people who love Jesus and are deeply concerned about the direction of our culture. For years everyone has seen our society headed in the wrong direction and most of them understand why. A one-sentence explanation is provided in Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
As a sin-sick society increasingly casts off righteousness, we can know for certain that God’s hand of blessing will go with it. This reality means that our most serious problems are not political, but moral and spiritual.
The Ten Commandments and Moral Order
Our contemporary culture has all the appearances of a vile gang who has sworn to disobey as many of the commandments as possible. People who deny the existence of God remain committed to using his name as a cuss word, children cast off restraint and dishonor their parents, we are increasingly fascinated with murdering life in the womb, our obsession with sexual immorality embraces every sexual sin from lust to pornography to homosexuality, our rejection of the truth is seen in increasing numbers of media outlets with decreasing ability to report the truth.
I could go on.
The point is that our culture has rejected the morality of God in the Ten Commandments, and their Author refuses to be mocked.
We are absolutely desperate to encounter the Ten Commandments, to understand them, to apply them based on the words and work of Jesus, and—only after that—to experience the blessing of God that comes with obedience.
The Ten Commandments for Today
I wrote The Ten Commandments: A Short Book for Normal People because I desperately want to see a revival in our country that can only come from God’s Word and God’s grace. I want normal people like you, your friends and coworkers, your children and grandchildren, your parents and siblings to have an easy resource they can pick and understand these ancient words that God revealed so long ago.
I know God is going to rescue us from these dark days of decay and death. I am praying this book on the Ten Commandments would be a small part of the recovery.
